Metrics

Track body weight, measurements and any number you choose, and follow each client’s progress photos.

Metrics overview

Metrics track any number that matters for a client over time: body weight, body fat, waist and other circumferences, or anything you define yourself. Every value is stored with a date, drawn on a chart, and summed up as an average and a trend.

Metrics work on two levels:

  • Your metric library: your workspace’s reusable list of metrics, each a name and a unit, on the Metrics page in the sidebar
  • Client metrics: the metrics one client actually tracks, each with its own history of values, on the Metrics tab of the client’s profile

In the coach app you can:

  • Build a library of your own metrics
  • Add metrics to a client from your library, from the built-in Fitora Library, or from scratch
  • Log, edit and delete a client’s values
  • Read a chart, an average and a trend for any period
  • See every metric for one week in a single grid
  • View, upload and compare the client’s progress photos

Clients log their own values in the Fitora app on iPhone and Android, and a check-in can collect them for you with a Metric question.

Built-in and custom metrics

Fitora comes with a set of common metrics, the Fitora Library, in two groups:

GroupMetrics
Body CompositionWeight, Lean Body Mass, Body Fat Mass and Muscle Mass in kg, and Body Fat in %
Body MeasurementsHip, Waist, Shoulders, Bicep Left, Bicep Right, Thigh Left, Thigh Right, Calf Left and Calf Right, all in cm

You are not limited to these. Create any metric with any unit, for example:

Custom metricUnit
Resting Heart Ratebpm
Sleep Durationhours
Water IntakeL
Bench Press 1RMkg
Vertical Jumpcm
Sprint Timeseconds

A metric is identified by its name and unit together, ignoring capital letters and extra spaces. “Weight” in kg and “weight” in kg are the same metric; “Weight” in kg and “Weight” in lbs are two different metrics.

Your metric library

The metric library is your workspace’s list of reusable metrics. You pick from it when you add a metric to a client and when you add a Metric question to a check-in or questionnaire.

Adding a metric

  1. Open Metrics in the sidebar, under Library
  2. Click + Add Metric
  3. Enter a Metric name, for example “Weight” or “Bench Press 1RM” (up to 100 characters)
  4. Enter a Metric unit, for example “kg”, “%” or “bpm” (optional, up to 30 characters)
  5. Click Save

Editing a metric

  1. On the Metrics page, click the metric’s row
  2. Change the name or unit in Edit metric
  3. Click Save

Deleting a metric

  1. Click the trash icon on the metric’s row
  2. Confirm with Delete metric

Your library holds each name and unit only once. Editing or deleting a library metric does not change metrics already added to clients or Metric questions already on your forms: each keeps its own name and unit.

Only the workspace owner and coaches with the Admin role can change the metric library. See Team.

Adding metrics to a client

  1. Open Clients in the sidebar, click the client and open the Metrics tab
  2. Click + New Metric
  3. In Add Metric, choose where the metric comes from (see the list below)
  4. Click Add Metric
  • New Metric: type a Name and a Unit yourself
  • Metric Library: pick one of the metrics in your library
  • Fitora Library: pick a built-in metric from Body Composition or Body Measurements

You add one metric at a time. A client’s metric needs a unit, and a client cannot have two metrics with the same name and unit.

A metric created on the New Metric tab belongs to this client only; it is not saved to your library.

You do not always have to add a metric yourself. When a client answers a check-in Metric question for a metric they do not track yet, Fitora adds it to their profile automatically.

Logging values for a client

Both you and the client can log values. To log one as the coach:

  1. Open the client’s Metrics tab
  2. Select the metric in the list on the left
  3. Click + Log Metric
  4. Enter the value in the field named after the metric, for example Weight Value
  5. Check the Date: it starts on today, and you can pick any other day
  6. Click Add Log

The value appears on the chart and under Recorded Values straight away.

A metric holds one value per day. If the date you picked already has a value, edit that value instead.

Editing or deleting a value

  • To edit a value, open the three-dot menu on its row under Recorded Values, choose Edit, change the value or date in Edit Log and click Update
  • To delete a value, open the same menu, choose Delete and confirm with Delete

Reading the chart

Select a metric on the client’s Metrics tab to see its details on the right. The period menu at the top, which starts on Last week, sets the range for everything below it: Last week, Last 2 weeks, Last 4 weeks, Last 2 months, Last 3 months, Last 6 months, Last 12 months or Maximum.

  • Average: the mean of every value in the period, with the unit
  • Trend: the change from the first to the last value in the period, as a percentage with an up or down arrow. It is hidden when nothing changed
  • Trend chart: every value in the period, plotted by date
  • Recorded Values: a table of the values in the period, newest first

The trend compares only the first and the last value. For a metric that jumps around from day to day, such as body weight, read the average over a longer period as well.

Metrics on the Overview tab

The Metrics Avg card on the client’s Overview tab lists every metric with its average across all values and its overall trend, so you see the essentials without opening the Metrics tab.

Weekly overview

The switch at the top of the client’s Metrics tab has two views:

  • Metrics: the list of metrics on the left and the selected metric’s details on the right. This is the default
  • Overview: a weekly grid with every metric at once

In Overview, each row is a metric, and the columns are Monday to Sunday plus the week’s average. Days without a value show a dash. Use the arrows to step to the previous or next week, or pick a week from the week picker between them.

The average column is the mean of the values logged that week. Days without a value are left out.

Open Overview while you review a weekly check-in: all the week’s numbers sit in one grid next to the client’s answers.

Editing or removing a client’s metric

Renaming a metric

  1. Select the metric on the client’s Metrics tab
  2. Click Edit Metric
  3. Change the Name or the Unit
  4. Click Save Changes

This changes the metric for this client only, not your library. Check-in answers find their metric by name and unit, so if you rename a metric that a Metric question feeds, the next answer starts a new metric under the question’s name.

Deleting a metric

  1. Select the metric and click Edit Metric
  2. Click Delete
  3. Confirm with Delete

Deleting a client’s metric also deletes all of its values.

Metrics in check-ins

A check-in or questionnaire can collect metric values for you with a Metric question:

  • When you add a Metric question, you choose the metric from your metric library
  • When the client submits, the answer is logged on that metric in their profile, dated the day they submitted, in their own time zone
  • If the client does not track that metric yet, it is added to their profile automatically
  • If the metric already has a value for that day, for example because the client submits the check-in twice, the new answer replaces it

On the submission, a metric answer carries a Synced tag, and View Graph shows that metric over the last 2 weeks without leaving the check-in. The same value is on the client’s Metrics tab.

For building forms, see Forms.

Progress photos

Progress photos are dated and filed by pose: Front, Side or Back. Only the client and their coaches can see them. Photos arrive in three ways: the client uploads them in the app, you upload them in the coach app, or the client adds them through a Progress Photos question in a check-in.

The Photos tab

Open the client’s Photos tab. Filter by All, Front, Side or Back, then pick a photo from the list on the left, where each one shows its pose and date, to see it large on the right. To delete a photo, click the trash icon on its row and confirm with Delete photo.

Uploading a photo for the client

  1. On the client’s Photos tab, click + Upload Photo
  2. Click Add Photo and choose an image
  3. Set the Date and the Pose
  4. Click Upload Photo

Comparing photos side by side

  1. On the client’s Photos tab, click Compare
  2. In Compare Photos, choose Front, Side or Back
  3. Pick a date for each side from the two date menus

The Progress Photos card on the client’s Overview tab shows the most recent photos. Click one to see it large, with its date and pose.

Through a check-in, each pose keeps one photo per day: if the client submits the check-in again the same day, the new photo replaces that day’s photo for the pose.

What clients see

Logging metrics in the app

The client taps their photo in the bottom bar to open Profile. Its Metrics section shows every metric on their profile with the latest value. Clients log values for these metrics; which metrics they track is up to you.

  1. The client taps a metric on Profile
  2. They tap + at the top right
  3. They enter the value and check the Date, which starts on today
  4. They tap Add

The metric’s page shows the Average and a chart for a Week, a Month or All Time, with arrows to step back through earlier weeks or months. Touching the chart shows the value and date at that point. The Activity list below it holds every entry; tapping one lets the client change it and tap Update, or delete it.

When a client logs a new value, you get a notification with the metric and the value. Clicking it opens the client’s Metrics tab.

Progress photos in the app

  • The Gallery card on Profile shows the latest photos. Tapping + lets the client choose a photo, set its Date and Pose, and tap Upload
  • Tapping a photo opens it large, where the client can also delete it
  • VIEW ALL opens the whole gallery with two tabs: Photos and Comparison. In Comparison the client picks a pose and steps through the dates to see two photos side by side

You get a notification when a client adds a progress photo. Clicking it opens their Photos tab.

Frequently asked questions

Can clients log their own metrics?
Yes. In the app they open Profile, tap a metric and add a value for any date. They can also edit or delete their own entries, and you are notified when they log a new value.
Who decides which metrics a client tracks?
You do. You add metrics on the client’s Metrics tab, and a check-in Metric question adds its metric automatically the first time the client answers it.
Do check-in answers sync to metrics?
Yes. The answer to a Metric question is logged on the client’s metric for the day they submitted, and it appears on their Metrics tab and chart.
Why is there a metric on a client’s profile that I did not add?
A check-in Metric question created it. When a client answers one for a metric they do not track yet, the metric is added to their profile.
How many values can a metric have per day?
One. To correct a day’s value, edit it. A check-in answered again the same day replaces that day’s value.
Does editing my metric library change my clients’ metrics?
No. A client’s metric keeps its own name and unit. Rename it on the client’s Metrics tab if you need to.
Are progress photos private?
Yes. Only the client and their coaches can see them.
Can I compare progress photos?
Yes. Click Compare on the client’s Photos tab, choose a pose and pick two dates. Clients can compare their own photos in the app’s gallery too.
