Challenges
Run leaderboard and milestone challenges that score themselves from what your clients log.
Updated
Challenges overview
Challenges are time-bound competitions for your clients. You choose one thing to count and the dates, add the people who take part, and Fitora scores everyone automatically from the workouts and food they log in the client app. Nobody types in a score.
Open Challenges in the sidebar, under Manage. The list shows every challenge you can open: its cover, name and number of participants, its Mode, its Date range and its Status. Click a row to open the challenge.
From this page you can:
- Start a new challenge with + Add Challenge, or from a ready-made one with Templates
- Open a challenge to follow its leaderboard or badge board
- Edit or delete a challenge from the three-dot menu at the end of its row
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Upcoming | The start date has not arrived yet. You can still move the start. |
| Active | The challenge is running and scores are counting. |
| Completed | The end date has passed. The final standings are kept and the challenge can no longer change. |
Owners and admins create and manage challenges. A standard coach sees only the challenges an owner or admin added them to, and has no + Add Challenge or Templates buttons. See Team for the roles. Challenges come with the Premium plan and every plan above it.
Challenge modes
The first step of a new challenge is its mode. The mode decides how progress is shown and who wins.
| Mode | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Leaderboard | Participants are ranked by their total score, highest first. The top three stand on a podium. | Clients who thrive on rankings and head-to-head competition |
| Milestone | You set five badge thresholds. Everyone who reaches a threshold earns that badge, so every participant can win something. | Longer challenges where every client should feel they can succeed |
In the challenge list and on the challenge page, a milestone challenge is labelled Badge Board, after the board that takes the place of the leaderboard.
Ranks are never shared. On a leaderboard, a tie goes to the participant who reached the score first, then to whoever joined the challenge first. On a badge board, participants are ranked by badges earned, then by score, with the same tie-breaks.
Use a leaderboard for short, high-energy competitions. Use milestones for longer challenges, so a client in the middle of the pack still has badges to chase.
Challenge types
Every challenge counts one thing, chosen under Challenge Type. The type decides what adds to a participant’s score and the unit the scores are shown in.
Workout types
| Type | What it counts | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Total Workouts Completed | Each workout the client finishes adds 1 | workouts |
| Total Workout Volume | Each finished workout adds its total volume: weight × reps of every logged set | kg |
| Total Reps | Each finished workout adds the reps of every logged set | reps |
Nutrition types
| Type | What it counts | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Total Days Logged | Each day with at least one food log entry counts 1 | days |
| Calorie Target Days | Each day whose logged calories reach the client’s calorie target counts 1 | days |
| Protein Target Days | Each day whose logged protein reaches the client’s protein target counts 1 | days |
Progress comes only from what clients do in the client app: the workouts they finish there and the food they log there. See how progress is tracked for the details.
Creating a challenge
- Open Challenges in the sidebar
- Click + Add Challenge in the top-right corner
- Choose Leaderboard or Milestone, then click Continue
- Optionally click Change on the cover image to pick a different cover (see below). A new challenge starts with a default cover
- Enter a Challenge Name (required, up to 50 characters)
- Optionally enter a Challenge Description of up to 500 characters: the goal, the rules, the prize
- Select a Challenge Type. The options are grouped, for example Workouts · Total Reps or Nutrition · Total Days Logged
- For a milestone challenge, choose a Badge Theme and fill in the five Badge Milestones (see Milestone badges)
- Set the Start and End dates
- Click Create Challenge
The challenge opens straight away, ready for you to add participants.
Choosing a cover image
- Click Change at the bottom right of the cover
- Pick one of the ready-made covers, or click Upload Image to use your own
- Check the preview and click Use Image
An image you upload is saved only when you click Use Image.
Changed your mind about the mode? Click Back at the bottom of the form to return to the first step.
Dates and challenge status
A challenge runs for whole days, from the start date to the end date, both included. The days follow the time zone of your browser when you create the challenge: it starts at midnight at the beginning of the start date and ends at midnight at the end of the end date.
- The start can be today or any later day, so you can schedule a challenge in advance
- A challenge runs for at least 3 and at most 62 days. The date pickers only offer end dates inside that range
- If the dates break a rule, the form shows Start today or later and run for 3 to 62 days. and Create Challenge stays disabled
The status follows the dates on its own: Upcoming before the start, Active while the challenge runs, Completed after the end. Coaches and clients see the same status and countdown, whatever their own time zone.
Scores are counted on each client’s own calendar days inside the challenge dates, so a client in another time zone still gets their full first and last day.
Milestone badges
A milestone challenge has five badge tiers. Each tier has a threshold, and a participant earns the badge as soon as their score reaches it.
Choosing a badge theme
Pick a theme under Badge Theme. Each theme has its own names and emoji for the five tiers, lowest first:
| Theme | Tier 1 | Tier 2 | Tier 3 | Tier 4 | Tier 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Medals | Bronze | Silver | Gold | Platinum | Diamond |
| Iron | Lifter | Powerhouse | Beast | Titan | Olympian |
| Journey | Explorer | Pathfinder | Voyager | Trailblazer | Pioneer |
| Summit | Hiker | Trekker | Climber | Mountaineer | Summiteer |
| Warriors | Warrior | Knight | Gladiator | Champion | Legend |
| Animals | Fox | Wolf | Bear | Lion | Dragon |
| Elements | Ember | Torrent | Tempest | Thunder | Cataclysm |
| Ranks | Cadet | Veteran | Captain | General | Elite |
Setting the thresholds
Under Badge Milestones, enter a number for each of the five tiers, in the challenge’s unit (workouts, kg, reps or days). Every threshold is required, must be a whole number above zero and must be higher than the one before it. Until they are, the form shows All badge thresholds are required and must be in ascending order.
For example, a Total Workouts Completed challenge with the Journey theme could use:
| Badge | Threshold |
|---|---|
| Explorer | 5 workouts |
| Pathfinder | 10 workouts |
| Voyager | 15 workouts |
| Trailblazer | 20 workouts |
| Pioneer | 25 workouts |
Set the first tier low enough that most clients earn it in the first days: an early win keeps them going. Make the fifth tier ambitious but reachable within the dates.
The badge theme and thresholds are fixed once the challenge is created.
Starting from a template
Instead of starting from scratch, you can start from a ready-made challenge with its name, description, badges and cover already filled in.
- On the Challenges page, click Templates
- Browse the Challenge Templates. Filter by mode (Leaderboard or Milestone) and by category, such as Workout or Nutrition. Click an active filter again to clear it
- Sort with Featured, Duration (shortest first) or Duration (longest first)
- Click a template card. Each card shows the cover, the name, a Featured tag or the mode, the description, the challenge type and the suggested length in days
- The editor opens pre-filled with the template’s name, description, mode, type, badge theme, thresholds and cover. The start is set to tomorrow and the end to match the suggested length
- Change anything you like, then click Create Challenge
| Category | Example templates |
|---|---|
| Workout | 30-Day Training Commitment, No Excuses, Tonnage Club, Rep Race, The 1000 Rep Challenge |
| Nutrition | 30 Days of Tracking, Hit Your Calories, Protein Priority, Accountability Week, Protein Wars |
A template is only a starting point. The challenge you create from it is your own, and changing it never changes the template.
Managing participants
Clients take part and are scored. Coaches from your team can be added too: they follow the challenge and receive its notifications, but they are not ranked.
Adding participants
- Open the challenge from the Challenges list
- Click Manage Access in the header
- In Manage Challenge Access, the left side lists the clients and coaches who are not in the challenge yet; coaches carry a Team tag. The right side, Members, shows who is already in
- Search by name in Search clients and coaches
- Tick everyone you want to add
- Click Add to Challenge
New participants start at 0. Their score counts from the day they were added, or from the start date if that is later. Activity from before they joined does not count.
Each client you add gets a notification that you added them. The challenge appears in their app straight away, even before it starts.
The left side shows up to 50 clients at a time. If a client is missing, search for them by name.
Removing participants
- Open Manage Access
- In Members, tick the people you want to remove
- Click Remove, then confirm with Remove
Removing a client deletes all of their progress in that challenge; adding them back starts them at 0 again. The workspace owner can’t be removed from a challenge.
Coaches in a challenge
The coach who creates a challenge is added to it automatically. Owners and admins see and manage every challenge in the workspace anyway; adding a standard coach is what lets them open the challenge, follow its leaderboard or badge board and receive its notifications. Only owners and admins can add or remove participants.
Participants can’t change once a challenge is completed: Manage Access disappears together with the final standings.
The challenge page
A challenge opens with its cover and name, the photos of the first participants and the participant count. On the right of the header are Manage Access and the pencil icon for editing (for owners and admins, until the challenge is completed) and the bell icon for your notification settings.
The leaderboard or badge board fills the main area. Beside it, the About card shows:
- Your description, with See more when it is longer than 150 characters
- The challenge type, with a short explanation of what it counts
- The start and end dates, with a status line such as Day 12 of 30, Starts in 3 days or Completed
- The mode, Leaderboard or Badge Board
- For milestone challenges, Milestones: the five badges with their emoji, name and threshold
Viewing the leaderboard
A leaderboard challenge shows the Leaderboard card:
- A countdown at the top right: the time left while the challenge is active, or Starts in … before it starts
- A podium for the top three, 🏆 first, 🥈 second and 🥉 third, each with their photo, name and score. A place stays empty until someone has scored more than zero
- A ranked table of everyone below the podium, with their place (4th, 5th …), name and Score in the challenge’s unit
Until anyone has been added, the card shows No participants yet.
Scores update as clients finish workouts and log food. When the challenge ends, the final standings stay exactly as they were and the status changes to Completed.
Viewing the badge board
A milestone challenge shows the Badge Board card instead of a leaderboard:
- Every participant in rank order: most badges first, then the highest score
- The participant’s current score under their name
- Five badges on each row: earned ones in full colour, the rest faded. Hover over a badge to see its name and threshold
- The same countdown as on a leaderboard, at the top right
Completion summary
When the challenge ends, a summary appears at the top of the board:
- The top achiever, with their badges out of five and their score
- Badges Earned: the badges all participants earned together
- Completed All: how many participants earned all five badges
- Completion Rate: the badges earned as a share of all the badges participants could have earned
What clients see in the app
Clients see the challenges they have been added to in the client app on iPhone and Android. They can’t join a challenge on their own.
On the Home screen
A Challenges card on Home lists each challenge with its cover, name and type. A leaderboard row ends with the client’s rank, such as #3; a milestone row shows the five badges, with the earned ones in colour. Tapping a row opens the challenge.
On the challenge screen
- The cover and name, with a status pill: Starts in … before the start, a countdown to the end while it runs, and Ended afterwards
- An info button that shows your description
- In a leaderboard: the podium, with You in place of their own name, and a numbered list of the other participants, where their own row is highlighted and marked (You)
- In a milestone challenge: the five badges on a track, their score, a progress bar with how much is left to the next badge, and All tiers unlocked! once they have all five. Tapping a badge explains how it was earned or what it takes. Below, every participant is listed with their badges
- Pulling down on the screen refreshes the scores
An ended challenge stays in the client app for 30 days after its end date, shown faded on Home. In the coach app you can open past challenges at any time.
How progress is tracked
Knowing exactly what counts helps you set expectations with clients. Two rules apply to every type:
- Only days inside the challenge dates count, and only from the day the client was added
- Days are the client’s own calendar days, in their time zone
Workout challenges
Progress is added the moment a client finishes a workout in the client app:
- Total Workouts Completed: each finished workout adds 1
- Total Workout Volume: the workout adds weight × reps, summed over every logged set that has both, in kg
- Total Reps: the workout adds the reps of every logged set
Nutrition challenges
Nutrition challenges count the food clients log in the food log of the client app. Each day is worth at most 1:
- Total Days Logged: any food log entry that day counts
- Calorie Target Days: the day counts when its total calories reach or exceed the client’s calorie target
- Protein Target Days: the day counts when its total protein reaches or exceeds the client’s protein target
The targets are the client’s macro targets for that day, including their rest-day targets on rest days. You set them on the client’s profile; see Nutrition. A client without a target never scores on target days.
When a client adds, changes or removes food on a day, that day is counted again, so a day can also stop counting if it drops below the target. Progress can’t be adjusted by hand.
Before a nutrition challenge starts, check that every participant has macro targets set.
Editing a challenge
Owners and admins can edit an upcoming or active challenge. Click the pencil icon on the challenge page, or Edit in the three-dot menu of its row in the list. Change the fields and click Update Challenge.
What you can change:
- The name, description and cover
- The end date, as long as the challenge still runs for 3 to 62 days
- The start date, only while the challenge is Upcoming, and only to today or later
What stays fixed:
- The mode
- The challenge type
- The badge theme and thresholds
A completed challenge can’t be edited. To run it again, create a new challenge or start from a template.
Deleting a challenge
- On the Challenges page, click the three-dot menu at the end of the challenge’s row
- Click Delete
- Confirm with Delete challenge
Deleting removes the challenge and every participant’s progress for good, and it can’t be undone. Completed challenges can be deleted too.
Challenge notifications
Your notification settings
Coaches are told when clients climb. Each coach chooses their own notifications, per challenge:
- Open the challenge
- Click the bell icon in the header
- Turn each notification on or off in Notification Settings. Every change saves at once
| Mode | Notification | When it arrives |
|---|---|---|
| Leaderboard | Entered Top 3 | A client moves into the top three |
| Leaderboard | New Leader | A client takes first place |
| Milestone | Badge Earned | A client earns a badge; the notification names it |
| Milestone | All Badges Completed | A client earns the fifth and last badge |
All four are on by default, and standard coaches can set their own too. Only coaches who are in the challenge receive them: the coach who created it and those added under Manage Access. A score of zero never takes the lead or a top-three place.
Automatic notifications
Fitora also sends these on its own at the key moments of every challenge:
| Notification | When | Who receives it |
|---|---|---|
| Added to a challenge | When you add a client | That client |
| Challenge started | Shortly after the start date begins | Every participant and coach in the challenge |
| Ending soon | 24 hours before the end | Every participant and coach in the challenge |
| Challenge ended | Shortly after the end, inviting everyone to see the final standings | Every participant and coach in the challenge |
Challenge notifications appear under the bell in the coach app and in the client app, and as push notifications on devices where notifications are allowed. Tapping one opens the challenge.
Frequently asked questions
- Why can’t a client see a challenge?
- Clients see only the challenges they have been added to. Open the challenge, click Manage Access and check that they are under Members. An ended challenge disappears from the client app 30 days after its end date.
- Why isn’t a client’s score going up?
- Only workouts finished and food logged in the client app count, and only on days inside the challenge dates from the day the client was added. Activity from before they joined does not count.
- Why don’t a client’s calorie or protein target days count?
- The client needs macro targets. A day counts when that day’s logged calories or protein reach or exceed the target, and a client without targets never scores on target days.
- Can I change a client’s score by hand?
- No. Scores come only from what clients log. If a client changes a day’s food log, that day is counted again automatically.
- Can clients join a challenge on their own?
- No. An owner or admin adds every participant, so each challenge stays within your coaching.
- How long can a challenge run?
- From 3 to 62 days, counting the start and end dates. The start can be today or any later day.
- What is the difference between Leaderboard and Milestone?
- A leaderboard ranks everyone by score, with the top three on a podium. A milestone challenge lets every participant earn five badges by reaching thresholds you set.
- Can standard coaches create challenges?
- No. Owners and admins create and manage challenges. A standard coach sees the challenges they have been added to and can set their own notifications for them.
- Which plan includes challenges?
- Challenges come with the Premium plan and every plan above it.
